A monetary scholarship is given in loving memory of Brenda Joyce Smith Harris, a devoted and long-time member of Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church in Bunn, NC. A passionate educator and advocate for learning, she served as a seventh-grade social studies teacher in Fayetteville, NC and dedicated her time and talents to nurturing the minds of young people. This scholarship continues her legacy of faith, service, and education.
Brenda Joyce Smith Harris, daughter of Ernestine Jones Smith and the late Robert Lee Smith was born in Franklin County, North Carolina. She was a graduate of Bunn High School (Bunn, NC) and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology from Fayetteville State University. During a brave battle with kidney cancer Brenda completed her Master of Education. Sadly, she succumbed to complications on September 12, 2009.
Brenda's propensity for learning began at an early age when she won a trip to a summer camp after memorizing the most Bible verses in a local competition. While family obligations initially required her to delay pursuing higher educational opportunities, her quest for knowledge was unwavering as she was an avid reader and formidable Scrabble opponent.
She instilled in her two daughters an understanding that a strong educational foundation can provide for both personal and professional growth. In love and deep gratitude, the Brenda Smith Harris Scholarship serves as a reflection of her commitment to young people and her community.
